Geology of the Mediterranean Area
A.Y. 2025/2026
Learning objectives
Providing the essential knowledge on the geology of the Mediterranean area, including orogenic belts, active subduction zones, and active extensional tectonics. The main lithostratigraphy and structures are described, a few of them are illustrated during field trips.
Expected learning outcomes
Recognizing simple rock sequences in the Mediterranean area, the main tectonic settings and their interplay.

Course syllabus
The Course is divided into two parts. The first part is dedicated to some geological aspects of the Mediterranea area. Some basic notions of geology such as extensional, convergent, and transcurrent tectonics and relative structures will be revised. Some paleogeographic interpretations proposed by various Authors will be presented to understand the evolution of the past and present Mediterranean area. This part of the course then will focus on some significant areas from the geodynamic point of view such as the orogenic belts. The main methodologies commonly used in marine geosciences will be illustrated to understand how the geological data can be obtained in submerged area. The second part of the Course will be devoted to the petrography, petrology and geochemistry of the main geological environments illustrated in the first part of the Course. In particular, the Cenozoic magmatic activity of the Italian Peninsula will be illustrated and explaind. A field trip in one of the described areas may possibly be organised.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of Geology, cartography, petrography and geochemistry.
Teaching methods
The Course will be given with a traditional method inclusing frontal lectures with the help of figures and text illustrated by PowerPoint files. All material used during classes will be uploaded on MyAriel platform.
Teaching Resources
All PowerPoint and Word files used during classes will be available. In addition, the scientific papers used during classes will be provided in pdf format and uploaded in MyAriel platform.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam will be an interview on the topics illustrated during classes.
