Learning objectives
The purpose of the course is to introduce students to the knowledge of formulation and stability aspects of peculiar cosmetic preparations, such as foams and mousses, spray deodorants, roll-ons. Cleaning products with specific purposes, such as face cleansers, toothpastes, hair, intimate hygiene, and specific aspects of cosmetic preparations for children will also be examined. The history of color cosmetic products, the psychological reasons for their use and the "color theory" will be analyzed and the physicochemical characteristics, the formulation and preparation aspects of the main categories of products used in the field of color cosmetics, such as lipsticks, eye shadows, face powders, undercoats, hair dyes, will be discussed. This matter will be treated considering evolution of the scientific concept of cosmetic and always increasing user needs.
Expected learning outcomes
The student will have acquired the useful knowledge to analyze and manage the market surveys preliminary to the preparation of the product and its complete technical arrangement.

Prerequisites for admission
In order to profitably follow the lectures and pass the exam, students should have basic knowledge of general as well as inorganic chemistry and of organic chemistry. It is also recommended to acquire information on pharmaceutical technology topics relevant to the contents of the course.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The final assessment will consist of a presentation, prepared in student couples and focused a topic chosen in agreement with the lecturer, coupled with an in-depth discussion of the latter (80%). The remaining part of the evaluation (20%) will rely on students' class attendance and on the delivery of any activities proposed by the lecturer

Hints on structure and function of human skin and appendageal structures. Relevant skin types, childhood and skin aging. Children's cosmetic products.
Basic aspects associated with preservation of cosmetic products.
Controls, stability and safety of cosmetics. Packaging.
Overview and market prevalence of the different categories of cosmetic products and types of formulations.
Skin cleansing products, formulations and interaction between surfactants and the skin. Hair products.
Cosmetic emulsification, formulation and preparation aspects. Sunscreen products, effects of sunlight on the skin.
Introduction to color cosmetics and color theory.
Formulation and preparation aspects of the main product categories relevant to color cosmetics: compacts, extrudates, poured products and emulsions. Critical analysis of color cosmetics.
Innovative aspects in cosmetics.
Regulatory framework for cosmetics, labeling aspects.
