Course syllabus
The workshop is organized in collaboration with the Instituto Cervantes in Milan, the Teatro Stabile in Bolzano, and Riccione Teatro Prize. As part of this collaboration and within the project "Nueva Escena Hispánica", which aims to spread contemporary Spanish-language drama in Italy, five recent works have been selected. Three of these will be staged as dramatic readings (mise en espace) at the Teatro Stabile di Bolzano. The authors of the texts will attend the stagings, and they will interact with the audience and discuss their works. Representatives of Spanish institutions and associations from the theatre and publishing field will also participate in the various meetings scheduled for the same weekend.
Prerequisites for admission
The workshop is aimed at all students interested in contemporary theatre, preferably (but not exclusively) Hispanists and Hispano-Americanists, enrolled in the BA programme (excluding the first year) and the MA programme.
Teaching methods
Prof. Cassol, the workshop teacher, will give some preliminary lectures on the selected playwrights and examine the original texts and, wherever possible, some clips of previous stagins. The students will travel to Bolzano from 20 to 22 October 2023 (travel, board and lodging costs are not covered) to attend the dramatic readings and meet the authors and the director Manuela Cherubini, who is also well known for her numerous translations of Spanish and Spanish-American plays.
Teaching Resources
The selected works are: "Un tercer lugar", by Denise Despeyroux; "Inquilino", by Paco Gámez; "La esfera que nos contiene", by Carmen Losa; "A.K.A. Also Known As", by Daniel J. Meyer; "Quirófano", by Almudena Ramírez Pantanella. The three texts of the final selection will be known briefly and, wherever possible, the teacher will provide them in advance.
Assessment methods and Criteria
The students, divided into groups, will prepare critical reviews and multimedia products on the works staged in Bolzano; the work is due by 15 December 2023. The credits will be assigned by 31 December 2023.
