Teaching Workshop: the Divina Commedia, a Poem of Love

Learning objectives
At the center of the Divina Commedia Dante inserts the idea, which is the guiding thread of the entire work, that love is the creative principle and the vital energy of the entire universe, and that the meaning of life of the man and his own destiny depend on his way of loving. The course intends to highlight this exegetical key through the reading and analysis of some episodes of the poem, from that of Paolo and Francesca to the vision of the «amor che move il sole e l'altre stelle».
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student must acquire:
- Knowledge of the Divina Commedia and in particular of the episodes in which love is mentioned
- Ability to read and analyze passages of the poem
- Ability to independently build critical paths within the poem.

Course syllabus
The laboratory intends to focus on the theme of love that runs through the entire Divine Comedy. After an introductory part, some fundamental songs will be read, commented and analysed: Inferno, II and V. Purgatorio, XVII, XVIII and XXX. Paradise, VIII, IX, XXVI, XXX and XXXIII.
Prerequisites for admission
No prerequisites are requested. The class is conducted entirely in Italian.

Assessment methods and Criteria
The exam consists of an oral interview of about 20 minutes in which the student, individually or in groups, will present a topic connected to the topics addressed during the laboratory.
The final evaluation of the exam is expressed with the approved / not approved judgment.
Attendance at lessons is strongly recommended.
Students unable to attend lessons are invited to go to the reception desk by the teacher, who will provide precise indications on the supplementary bibliography with which to replace attendance.
Foreign and incoming Erasmus students who have particular linguistic difficulties with Italian can write an email to the teacher to arrange a reception and agree on a specific program. The course program is valid until February 2025.
Students with any disabilities are kindly asked to contact the teacher in order to agree on alternative examination methods, in agreement with the competent office.
