Overall hours
Language

Learning objectives
The Workshop aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to approach the study of periodicals, highlighting possible research perspectives and outcomes in teaching, with particular reference to the teaching of foreign languages and cultures in secondary educational institutions. Therefore, the analytical tools commonly used in Periodical Studies will be presented and discussed, as well as the strategies for developing Learning Units (referred to as UA in Italian guidelines) comprising 'document-based' lessons.
Expected learning outcomes
Upon concluding the course, students will have acquired the knowledge of the main analytical and theoretical perspectives developed within Periodical Studies as well as the practical skills useful for setting up both a research project and a Learning Unit. Any student will therefore be able to investigate the sources available - specifically the periodical literature accessible through the University Library Catalogue - thanks to the continuous application of a critical approach to the texts carried out in guided group activities. Finally, both the Workshop's syllabus and the students' projects will be constantly discussed in order to turn the Workshop into a formative and participatory experience.

Course syllabus
The Workshop aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to approach the study of periodicals, highlighting possible research perspectives and repercussions on teaching, with particular reference to the teaching of foreign languages and cultures in secondary education institutions.
The study of periodicals lends itself well to the development of innovative and interdisciplinary teaching methodologies given the composite nature of the periodical which invites cooperation between young scholars with different interests and skills. The proposed activity is therefore characterized by a markedly collaborative atmosphere: first, an overview of the discipline is followed by a reflection on the peculiarities of the periodical understood as a 'magmatic text' - this part will be conducted by bringing to attention the periodicals recently added to the University Library Catalogue. Students will then be invited to choose the periodical that is closest to their linguistic-cultural areas of interest because it will be the object of their investigation and work in the second part of the Workshop. In fact, students will have to analyze the periodical they have identified in mentored group activities, during which the analytical tools commonly used in Periodical Studies will be presented; starting from their research, students will finally be invited to develop examples of 'document-based' learning units. At any time, the projects and investigations will be subject to group discussion aimed at highlighting their positive and critical aspects.
Prerequisites for admission
For third year students and MA students. They should have a good undestanding of written English.
Teaching methods
The following teaching/learning methods will be employed: presentations by the lecturer and students by means of PPTs and audiovisual materials; cooperative learning.
Teaching Resources
During the workshop, teaching tools and materials will be made available by the lecturer on the dedicated Microsoft Teams channel. The same e-learning platform will also ensure lecturer-students interaction.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Ongoing assessment based on participation in the activities carried out in class. Classroom interaction with the lecturer is an integral part of the teaching method and aims to promote the student's critical skills and ensure the practice of newly-developed competences.
