Learning objectives
The goal of the seminar is to provide students with a philosophical background as regards the following points:

- Knowledge of the essential traits of "Aesthetics" as a philosophical discipline
- Introduction to the notions of "documentary" and "fiction"
- A philosophical approach to the notion of "belief"
- Analysis of the relationship between photographic image and reality
- Analysis of possible approaches to "documentary" and "fictional" cinema
- Analysis of some differences between emotions experienced in reality and emotions experienced through fiction
Expected learning outcomes
Students will acquire the following skills:

· Develop a critical thinking concerning the distinction between documentary and fiction and recognize some new form of interactions between these two dimensions

· Ability to apply the knowledge concerning the analyzed aesthetic categories to the contemporary debate on images, specifically as regards cinema and photography
· Gain perspective regarding the practical implications of the theoretical results for a better understanding of their relationship with the contemporary iconic environment

· Ability to create a presentation (PowerPoint or short text) that develops the learning objectives and offer a critical reading of either a film or a photograph

Prerequisites for admission
No specific prerequisites are required. Students are expected to attend all sessions and to participate in course assignments and activities.

Lectures based on analysis, synthesis, discussion of philosophical texts, intended to foster student's ability to elaborate a critical point of view on the relevant subjects
