Learning objectives
The course aims to provide the technical and scientific knowledge needed to tackle the problems of water resources use and of hydraulic protection, with particular reference to forest and mountain environment.
Expected learning outcomes
Addressing and solving problems of hydrostatics and of uniform flow hydrodynamics in open channels and pipes;
design and verification of simple hydraulic infrastructures.

Physical characteristics of water. Fundamental quantities involved in hydraulics and their units. Elements of hydrostatics. Instruments for pressure measurement. Calculation of thrusts on the walls reservoir or on channel banks. Fundamentals of water flow. Elements of kinematics. Bernoulli's theorem. Equation of uniform flow. Uniform flow of water in pipes. Pumps and pump power calculation for pipe flow system. Free-surface flow. Design and verification criteria of open channels with non-uniform section characteristics. Uniform flow in the open channels. Design and verification criteria. Flow through an orifice. Flow metering devices in open channels.
