Learning objectives
Students will develop the language skills needed to reach at least level B1, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, in writing, listening and speaking, and level B2 in reading to ensure competency in understanding written information regarding the subjects they will be studying as part of the undergraduate course.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course students will be able to: - enter into conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events) using appropriate vocabulary and functions. - understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, study, leisure. - write simple connected text on topics which are familiar or connected to their interests and studies. - understand specialised, academic and scientific articles connected to the undergraduate course having acquired a working knowledge of specialist vocabulary

Grammar: present simple and progressive, past simple and progressive, present perfect simple and duration form, futures with will, to be going to and present progressive, may/might, can/could, must, should, would, nouns, articles, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, quantifiers, comparatives and superlatives, interrogative and relative pronouns, passives, zero and 1st conditionals. Functions: Give personal information. Talk about houses and towns, likes, dislikes, preferences, daily life, work, routines, hobbies, weekend and seasonal activities, weather, holidays, people's lives, transport and travel, sport, past activities and experiences, future plans and ambitions, probability, food, jobs, entertainment, rules and regulations, shops and shopping, health, the natural environment, environmental issues. Explain processes. Describe what's happening at the moment or in a picture, people, clothes. Give advice and opinions, agree and disagree. Reading, comprehension and translation from English of specialist texts, regarding subjects part of the undergraduate course: comprehension techniques, grammar and vocabulary analysis, context, specialist vocabulary, synonyms, introduction and practice in understanding collocations and grammar structures used in scientific and academic texts, summarizing, scanning
