This lab investigates a rich intersectional space within contemporary American theatre, that will be explored in its cultural, gendered, linguistic and geographical refractions. The object of our analysis and work is Heather Raffo's Nine Parts of Desire. In this choral, all-female war drama by an Iraqi-American playwright, the dialectics between identity, voice, body and language will be explored in the gendered terrain of war and its performance.
After a preliminary frame on the cultural and theatrical context of Raffo's work, as well as of the challenges ethnic (and, more specifically, Arab-American) theatre has to face, students will be asked to explore (both with the teacher's support and autonomously) the protagonist(s)' characterization through the use of physical and linguistic elements, and face the challenges a cultual/linguistic translation in a foreign context imply.
