Part A: THE HANDWRITTEN TRADITION OF PETRARCA'S CANZONIERE: FORMS AND ISSUES
The lectures will focus on the problem of the macro-textual dimension of Petrarch's Canzoniere and the reconstruction of its development through the manuscript witnesses we have at our disposal, thus allowing us to address several problems (and to compare different perspectives and hypotheses):
- the complex definition of the "canzoniere" form,
- the issues related to the conjectural reconstruction of editorial stages of the work, in particular the so-called "Correggio" redaction,
- the disclosure of provisional forms of the work, in particular the "Chigi" form and the "Malatesta" form,
- the setting up of the ms. Vaticano Latino 3195 and the problem of the work's completeness.
Part B: FIFTEENTH CENTURY POETRY COLLECTIONS BETWEEN PHILOLOGY AND INTERPRETATION
The lectures will focus on the issues that need to be addressed in setting up the edition of an author's "canzoniere", with particular regard to two different fifteenth-century cases.
The course will thus familiarize students with methodological problems and instruments; particularly with regard to:
- criteria of filing and cataloguing, with particular regard to the Atlante de canzonieri in volgare del Quattrocento, edited by Andrea Comboni and Tiziano Zanato;
- the complex tradition of a canzoniere with multiple witnesses and handed down in forms of different extensions: the Bella mano of Giusto de' Conti;
- the problems of an anonymous single-witness collection;
- the potential of metrical analysis in the investigation of a macrotext.
Part C: ANALYSIS OF PHILOLOGICAL ISSUES IN POETRY COLLECTIONS
Attending students will be asked to choose a case study from within a range of poetic books that will be indicated, with a bibliography (which can be supplemented if necessary), at the beginning of Part A. Students will be divided into groups; within each group students will distribute among themselves the aspects on which they will focus their attention and on which they will make an exposition to the rest of the class, taking into consideration: the questions posed by the specific works, starting from the tradition known to us, the positions that have been expressed regarding philological issues, the existing editions and the criteria on which they are based, the choices made by scholars, including through the examination of some texts.
Non-attending students will read one or two poetry collections from among those that will be listed in the "Teaching resources" section.

Teaching methods
Class attendance is strongly recommended, although not mandatory. Non-attending students are recommended to make contact with the teacher.
Parts A and B involve face-to-face lectures, in which content and methodological problems will be addressed with the help of slides, the viewing of reproductions of manuscripts, and the use of useful sites. Dialogue and discussion on the issues gradually addressed will be an integral part of the course.
Part C will involve students putting what they have learned to good use by working individually and in groups on case studies, which will then be exposed to the class and will be the subject of a written paper that will contribute to the evaluation.
