Learning objectives
A primary objective of the course is to provide information about biological macromolecules and prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells. Another goal is to provide basic knowledge related to the biology of insects and fungi in particular, especially regarding their structure, the influence of abiotic and biotic factors on their biology, strategies for self-preservation and reproduction, and their relationships with other organisms. Regarding insects, the intention is to provide knowledge to assess symptoms, the damage caused by different harmful species, monitoring techniques, and defense strategies with particular attention to eco-friendly ones. In addition, information will be provided on laboratory methods useful for studying and identifying these organisms as well as assessing their presence in the environments they colonize.
Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will be able to: - Understand the structure and functions of biological macromolecules - Know prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells (particularly fungal and animal cells). - Identify the damage caused by insects to cultural heritage. - Recognize the main insects that can cause damage to cultural assets. - Evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively the presence in the different considered environments and interpret the influence of environmental variations on the insect populations considered. - Propose methods for the proper management of harmful insects in the conservation environments of cultural heritage.
