Learning objectives
The course aims to offer the French student an in-depth knowledge of the functioning of the French language system in the different communicative situations in which it is used, allowing him/her to discover the specificities of the different varieties in use outside France and to develop a capacity for critical reflection on the language.
Expected learning outcomes
Knowledge: widening of the sociolinguistic knowledge needed to reflect on the functioning of standard and non-standard French, in the different social and geographical spaces; deepening of the notions of norm and variation.
Skills: acquisition of greater familiarity with the authentic uses of French; ability to reflect on the social functions of French in the different language communities in which it is used; development of the metalinguistic reflection capacity; extension of metalanguage.

Course syllabus
The course, entitled 'French dictionaries, a tool for linguistic and cultural reflection', is divided into three parts:
A: Dictionaries of French from the Middle Ages to the 20th century
B: The digital age: electronic dictionaries of French and its varieties
C: The profession of the lexicographer
Parts A and B aim to illustrate the variety of lexicographic production relating to the French language, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and to enable the French-language learner to discover the complexity and characteristics of the different types of dictionaries in order to be able to use them effectively according to one's own linguistic needs and study and research requirements.
The third part aims to explore the two aspects of the lexicographer's work: the theoretical, through the analysis of dictionary articles of the student's choice, and the practical, through the writing of a dictionary article.

The course has a website on the online platform for teaching MyAriel, to which you can refer for all communications; the teaching materials used during lectures will be collected here.
Prerequisites for admission
Lessons will be taught entirely in French. Textbooks and activities in class or for self study assume that students already have a linguistic competence of level B2.

Note to non-attending students
Non-attending students should contact the lecturer before beginning exam preparation. Given the greater difficulties arising from self-preparation, it is recommended that you devote an appropriate amount of time to studying and working through the contents of the syllabus.
Assessment methods and Criteria
Preparation for parts A and B is assessed through an interview in French on the topics in the syllabus, aimed at ascertaining knowledge of the contents and the ability to reflect on the phenomena studied, also through the analysis of the documents proposed during the lectures and made available on teaching platforms. Part C will be tested by means of a commentary on the work carried out during the course for attending students, while non-attending students will be tested by means of an interview on the bibliography in the syllabus.

Students interested in acquiring 6 cfu will follow the syllabus for parts A and B; students interested in acquiring 9 cfu will follow the full syllabus.
The examination must be completed by February 2027.

INTERNATIONAL students or incoming ERASMUS students are invited to quickly contact the teacher. The examination procedures for students with disabilities and/or DSA must be agreed with the teacher, in accordance with the responsible Office.
