Teaching Workshop: Bibliographical Research and Electronic Resources for Ma Students (C73). Methods and Instruments

Learning objectives
The course aims at providing MA students with:
1) the necessary theoretical and methodological framework of an online bibliographical research
2) knowledge for a targeted use of the main online information resources dedicated to foreign languages and literatures, including the free ones
3) transversal skills and practical tools that can be used both to carry out their research effectively and to be able to document on any subject with a critical spirit
4) knowledge of the main specialized resources within the University of Milan digital library
5) basic knowledge of the forms and methods of creation and transmission of disciplinary academic literature with special reference to Open Access

Expected learning outcomes
At the end of the course participants may have acquired the awareness of the complexity of the online information universe with special reference to the disciplinary fields of foreign languages and literatures. Moreover the students will have a synthetic picture of the theoretical-methodological notions underlying a bibliographic research.
The learners will be also able to carry on independently an online bibliographical research thanks to the resources presented and the skills acquired, also through the many exercises done.
Students will also be equipped with the specialist expertise needed on the main online resources both in the University digital library and open access.

-Other tools for broadening an online bibliographical research: national, Italian and foreign collective catalogs; the national libraries sites as research portals
-Online bibliographical research (on the net): evaluating free websites, Open Access as a search tool, free specialized quality resources
-How to write the bibliography for the thesis: basic notions of citation style and suggestions for setting up the final bibliography

The course combines a theoretical and applied approach
After a theoretical-methodological first part, the following lessons are dedicated to the presentation of the different online resources. These lessons combine presentations given by the teacher with both analysis and practical activities, thus encouraging participation by students. This aspect is reinforced by the adoption of the completely synchronous mode.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Given the highly practical nature of the course, during the lessons will be assigned both exercises on the online resources illustrated in class and short tasks. In this way, students will be able to test their skills awareness. At the end of the lessons, each participant will be assigned a personalized final test (the languages which students are studying will be taken into account). In this test students will be required to use both the mail online resources and also some specific resources particularly useful for the disciplinary field of the test. Students will be required also to draw up the relative bibliography citing mainly articles and essays.
The aspects that will be considered will be: selection and types of resources used; the ability to identify the most suitable online resources in relation to the assigned theme; etc.
Above all, each student will be invited to self-assessment by making a comparison with what has been done as a final exam at the end of the three-year study course.
