Learning objectives
The course aims to provide students with the basic notions of areas of Archival Studies, their historical development, the Italian archival regulations and organization as well as the different types of research tools and the phases and problems of the reorganization and description of the archives.
Expected learning outcomes
The student is expected to be able to find his way through the different archives' conservation institutes and among the multiple research tools, and to assimilate the most relevant aspects of good practices for a suitable physical conservation of traditional and photographic documents. The student must be able to communicate clearly and correctly the contents learned and have a fair command of the specialized vocabulary of the subject.

Note: the 40-hour course coincides with the first two modules of the "Archivistica" course (Faculty of Humanities):
- Part A (20 hours, 3 cfu): Archives, fonds, collections, records: for a correct understanding of basic issues. Outlines of archive history.
- Part B (20 hours, 3 cfu): The Italian archival organisation. Finding aids and archival information systems. Archival description.
Prerequisites for admission
Basic knowledge of the main historical events that can be found in high school textbooks (from early Modern to Contemporary age).
Teaching methods
Class attendance is recommended but not compulsory. The teaching consists mainly of lectures aimed primarily at acquiring the knowledge, skills and language of the discipline.

2. P. Carucci, Le fonti archivistiche. Ordinamento e conservazione, Roma, Carocci editore (qualsiasi ristampa): tutto tranne i paragrafi 3.4 e 6.7 e tranne l'Appendice normativa; oppure in alternativa: M.B. Bertini, La conservazione dei beni archivistici e librari: prevenzione e piani d'emergenza, Roma, Carocci editore, 2005 (tutto tranne il capitolo 2 che è solo da leggere).
Gli studenti non frequentanti, iscritti a tale corso di laurea, prepareranno inoltre i seguenti due articoli:
- M.B. Bertini, Riflessioni in merito alla conservazione preventiva
- D. Fissore et alii, La liofilizzazione: una tecnica efficace per il recupero di materiale archivistico a seguito di allagamento
