Teaching Workshop: the Art and the Document. How to Interpret the Middle Ages from Sources

Learning objectives
The aim of the course is to provide the broad outlines for employing the sources to understand the main political, economic, social and religious elements visible during the centuries of the late ancient age to the early Renaissance.
Expected learning outcomes
By the end of the course the student will have acquired the the essential tools to carry out research in medieval history, with particular reference to the medieval period:
-building a bibliography through the available research tools (catalogues and online repertories, dictionaries, databases);
-knowing the main types of medieval sources: reading published records and finding the way through the unpublished

Title of the course: The Art and the Document. How to interpret the Middle Ages from sources
Prerequisites for admission
The workshop favors the second-third year BA students and MA students (first- or second year). The workshop will be held in Italian language.
Teaching methods
Attendance to classes is mandatory. Laboratory is delivered through lectures aimed at providing the student with the essential tools to carry out research in medieval history, with particular reference to the medieval period:
- building a bibliography through the available research tools (catalogues and online repertories, dictionaries, databases);
- knowing the main types of medieval sources, especially documentary and artistic, and knowing how to evaluate historical reliability.
These skills will be first acquired by practicing on research tools and sources, and then through the guided tour of archives, libraries and museums. Discussion with the teacher during lectures is integrant part of the didactic method and aims at promoting a critical attitude and the ability to apply the acquired competence and knowledge.
The teaching is also based on didactic material provided on Ariel platform: slides, texts, videos, documents.

Assessment methods and Criteria
Method: the final evaluation will derive from the students' attendance, their active participation in the discussion and the conduct of any assigned tests.
Evaluation criteria: ability to demonstrate and elaborate knowledge; ability for critical reflection on the completed work.
Type of evaluation method: the final mark will be an evaluation recorded as approved/Not approved. It is not possible for students to reject the final mark.
The format of the exam for students with disabilities should be arranged in advance with the professor, as well as the relevant office.
