Learning objectives
The educational approach consist of frontal lessons and project works. The oral examination is exclusively based on the project work. The written examination is a multiple choice test.
The course program is divided in five topics related to environment and environmental sustainability. During the earliest lessons every student will be supported to choose the subject of the project work and a specific project plan will be developed with the professor.

Goals

LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENT (LCA)
- Life cycle thinking and life cycle assessment (LCA) - International standards for product applications: ISO series 14040.
- Global warming and the emission trading rules - An outline of related international standards (e.g. PAS 2050 - Short account on energy assessment.
- Life cycle assessment (LCA) and eco-design: a model to develop sustainable products. An outline of the new approach of the European Commission to sustainable products (PEF).
- PROJECT WORK: LCA short study of an industrial product based on international data banks.
ENVIRONMENTAL LEGISLATION
- European legislation and environment: air - water - ground - waste.
- European legislation and substances: Reg. REACH and risk assessment of chemical substances. An outline of other related legislations: transport of chemicals (ADR) - labelling of chemicals (CLP).
- National authorities and environmental control: Italy and Europe.
- PROJECT WORK: Summary of registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of a specific substance.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL AND SUSTAINABILITY
- Environmental control and the related international standards for organizations: ISO 14001 and others ISO standards.
- Sustainability management systems: ISO 26000 - GRI (Global Reporting Initiative) and other models for social responsibility reporting.
- Environmental risk assessment referred to European Legislation.
- PROJECT WORK: Environmental risk assessment of a real organization.
ANALYTICAL APPROACH TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL
- Accreditation of laboratories in the environmental field: ISO 17025. Quality assurance of analytical results: ISO 17043 and ISO 13528.
- Analytical methods and environment: an outline of national and international references.
- Measurement uncertainty and the limits on legislation: a decision making approach.
- PROJECT WORK: Performance and limits of a specific analytical method applied to environmental determinations.
ENVIRONMENTAL ECONOMICS AND OTHER MATHEMATICAL MODELS APPLIED TO ENVIRONMENT
- Sustainability and sustainable development: the international approach.
- Environmental economics or ecological economics: the economic thought on the environment.
- Natural resources: renewable and not renewable resources.
- Mathematical modelling and the environment.
